Cosmetology

The Cosmetology program prepares students to become the creative, well-trained professionals demanded by today's beauty industry. The Professional Cosmetologist will be trained with entry-level skills relating to hair, nails and skin with an emphasis on hygiene, sanitation, customer relations and salon management. The program provides the Cosmetologist with theory and skills-training in basic haircutting, hairstyling, and hair coloring. In addition to training on related hair services, nail and skin care will be introduced and implemented. Graduates are eligible to take the licensing examination from the West Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists.

This is a Day time program. Class meets Monday - Friday 7:30am to 2:30pm

Depending on weather class usually takes time off in June and starts back early July.

This 1800 hour program can be completed in about 19 months. (315 School days)

Class starts in March and September each year.

Per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Apr 10, 2020:

Number of available jobs as of 2018 - 766,100

Job Outlook from 2018 to 2028 - 8% growth

Median Pay 2019 - $26,270 per year or $12.63 per hour

The March class can TABE test starting in December.

The September class can TABE test starting in July.

Students sit for their WV Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists license upon completion.

Financial Aid

The Cosmetology program qualifies for Pell, Heaps, VA, WIOA and WV Vocational Rehabilitation. These are Grants not Loans. ACT does not offer in any student loan options.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

To meet SAP, a student must:

  • Maintain a continuous "C" average.

  • Attend at least 90% of the program hours for each grading period.

  • Maintain a continuous 90% attendance rate for the program.

  • Complete the course within the originally scheduled course hours.

Refund Policy

During the first enrollment period 1 to 900 hours

There is no refund for fees after the start of class! There is a 100% refund on tuition during the first five days of the program! There is a 50% refund on tuition during day 6 thru day 10 of the program! After day 10 of the program there is No Refund!!

During the second enrollment period 901 to 1800 hours

There is No Refund once the second enrollment period starts!

        Complete your Financial Aid Applications.

  • Notify ACT's financial aid department that your applications are filed. 

  • Successfully complete required hours and TABE with Adult Center

Once Financial Aid Applications Are Received by ACT

                   PLEASE BE ADVISED allow 10 or more business days for ACT

                   to receive your report.

  • You will be contacted by ACT's financial aid office.

  • You must supply any required documentation to complete financial aid.

  • You must schedule an appointment to register for class.

    • You will need to complete the following:             

  1. The WV Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists Application.          

  2. The Certificate of Health signed by a physician.

         To Register you MUST bring the following with you:

  1. High school diploma or WV approved equivalent

  2. Social Security card

  3. Photo ID

  4. Non-Refundable registration $201 (must be exact change/check)

  5. Certificate of Health

  6. WV Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists Application

  7. 2"x2" photo for application

          During Registration be prepared to:        

  1. Complete Registration form

  2. Register for background check

  3. Apply for additional funding (if needed)

  4. Sign Cost Sheet and agree to school policies

  5. Sign Awarded Letter (if applicable)
